Asking for help looks easy from the outside and feels anything but. That's why your students go without, figure it out alone, or wait too long. They know what they need. They just don't know how to ask for it in English. This Asking for Help role play pack gives adult ESL students a place to practice those requests before they're in a situation where it really counts, whether they're at work, in a store, or trying to sort out an emergency.

For students who are new to a country, asking for help can feel like a double risk because they're exposing a gap in their language while also being uncertain about the social rules around asking in the first place. Is this too formal? Too casual? Will I seem rude, helpless, or demanding?

These are real questions that come up when a student needs directions, when something goes wrong at work, or when a neighbor or coworker offers assistance and they're not sure how to respond. This role play pack gives students the chance to work through those situations before they're standing in the middle of one.

WHAT'S INSIDE the 55-page ROLE PLAY PACK:

  • ✅ Teacher pages — a full lesson guide covering introduction, goals, engagement strategies, study sections, and suggestions for using the scripts and scenario cards
  • ✅ 2 Anticipation pages— Rate It worksheets where students reflect on and rate statements related to asking for help, designed to spark discussion and get students thinking about the theme before diving in
  • ✅ Idioms/expressions handout — common idioms and proverbs related to asking for help, with brief definitions (2 pages)
  • ✅ Essential vocabulary handout — a one-pager of relevant words and phrases for discussing and practicing the theme
  • ✅ 3 Conversation matching worksheets — students match lettered responses to the blank lines in a two-person conversation to build complete, natural-sounding dialogues.
  • ✅ 3 Conversation numbering worksheets — students number scrambled lines in the correct order for a bigger challenge. These are the same conversations as in the previously mentioned conversation matching worksheets (just a different format)
  • ✅ 3 Conversation Scripts — These are the SAME conversations as in the matching and numbering worksheets, but now all the dialogue is presented at once, in order, so that you can also use these as scripts if you want.
  • ✅ Dialogue prompts — half-page prompt cards for pairs; gives students ideas for what to say and when without scripting the language, so the actual conversation is up to them
  • ✅ Mini-scripts — 14 half-page scripts for pairs, ready to use as is or to build on; more advanced students can add lines or work toward memorization
  • ✅ Scripts — 10 longer scripts written for two or three characters, suitable for reader's theater
  • ✅ Scenario cards — 10 sets of character cards for pairs or small groups, for impromptu role plays or script writing

THIS IS DESIGNED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS

Every scenario, every script, and every conversation in this pack was written with adult students in mind. THese are the kinds of moments your students are likely to face, like asking a coworker to cover for them, getting help from a stranger when something goes wrong, or figuring out how to respond when someone offers assistance thatthey're not sure they want.

This role play activity pack also works well with older secondary students in life skills classes who are building the same practical communication skills. If your students are mature enough to encounter these situations on their own in the real world, they're the right audience for this pack.
