Politics Idioms Activity Pack for Adult ESL
We can’t avoid politics, but we can help our adult ESL students understand some of the idioms and expressions they hear when politics is part of the conversation or news story. They might be wondering what do dark horses have to do with lame ducks, and are they all slinging mud at spin doctors? So, why not give them the figurative language they need to understand what others are talking about and maybe join in if they want?
With this, your students will learn 30 idioms and expressions that they might hear or want to use. They’ll be practicing and reviewing all 30 with activities that make the terms memorable. These pages will be the ones that go home with them, not get tossed in the trash on their way out at the end of class.
Idioms are the kind of everyday English that fluent speakers use without thinking twice but present a roadblock to people learning English. That’s why your students need to understand that a “grassroots movement” doesn’t involve a city code violation for tall grass, that a Hail Mary is not about religion, and that no one is selling tickets for a whistle stop tour. Once they get that, they can start having fun making figurative language part of their daily communication.

⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️
This pack is centered on helping adult ESL students learn and practice using common idioms and expressions that appear when politics is the conversation or the story in the news. That is the goal.
If you believe or suspect that your group of students would use this to take the class in a direction that you don't want or can't go, reconsider purchasing it.
