Present Perfect Task Cards for Secondary to Adult ESL Grammar Students
These 44 present perfect tense task cards give high-beginner to intermediate adult ESL grammar students focused, varied practice using eight different card types. Present perfect has a lot of parts to it, and some are easier than others. Some students get the form right away but struggle with "for" vs. "since." Others mix up word order. Others freeze when they hear it in a question, and so on. These cards hit all of it, giving your students repeated, low-stakes practice.
WHAT'S INSIDE (44 task cards in two print formats):
✅ 44 task cards with your choice of in color or in a low-ink, black and white design. The content of the sets is the same.
✅ teacher guide with ideas for solo work, pair activities, group practice, oral drills, writing tasks, and whole-class games
✅ answer key included (of course)
The cards rotate through the following 8 question types:
- error correction: Find and fix the present perfect mistake.
- multiple choice: Choose the correct present perfect sentence.
- fill-in-the-blank: Use the correct form of the given verb to complete the sentence.
- choose the best response: Pick the most appropriate reply to a present perfect question.
- already / yet: Choose the right word to complete the sentence.
- for / since: Select the correct time expression.
- unscramble: Put the words in the right order to write a present perfect sentence.
- true or false: Read the present perfect statement and decide if it's correct.
HOW TO USE THESE TASK CARDS:
Use the cards after direct instruction as focused practice, or pull them out later as a spiral review when students need a refresher. The eight card types make them easy to differentiate because you can assign certain types to students who need more scaffolding, and other types to students who are ready for a bigger challenge.
For speaking practice, have pairs work through the "choose the best response" cards together and explain their reasoning out loud. The unscramble cards work well for team races or timed partner challenges. The teacher guide has more ideas for stations, gallery walks, and whole-class activities... there's a lot you can do with 44 cards.
THIS IS DESIGNED FOR ADULT ESL STUDENTS
High-beginner to intermediate adult ESL grammar students need present perfect practice that goes beyond form drills. These cards build understanding through context because students aren't just conjugating verbs in isolation, they're reading sentences, making choices, spotting errors, and producing language. These cards give them focused repetition without making it feel like a worksheet marathon.
This set also works well in secondary ESL classrooms and with native English-speakers who have gaps in their grammar knowledge that need to be filled.
