Give your adult ESL students engaging grammar practice with this count and noncount noun sorting activity! Now that your students understand the difference between countable and uncountable nouns, let them put their skills to the test by sorting nouns in a hands-on, interactive way. Sure, you could hand out a worksheet, but this activity will energize your classroom and keep them alert!

You want your students to recognize count and noncount nouns automatically, without stopping to think about it every time, right? English proficiency tests, college writing, and everyday conversations all require this kind of instant recognition. Well, the more they practice sorting and categorizing, the faster it becomes second nature.

What's Inside this PDF file:

✅ 64 full-color photo cards (32 count nouns, 32 noncount nouns)

  • Each card shows a clear photo plus the noun (no guessing what the image is supposed to be)
  • Cards are formatted 8 per page to save ink and make cutting easier

✅ Teacher reference page with sorted lists of all nouns (for checking work or when you have a sub)

✅ Teaching suggestions page

How to Use It:

Print, cut, done. That's your prep.

The teaching suggestions page gives you a couple of activity options, but the basic version is simple: students sort the cards into count and noncount piles. You can have them work individually, in pairs, or in small groups. Some teachers like to time it and make it competitive. Others use it as a review station while working with small groups.

If you're teaching lower-level students, flip through the cards first and pull out any nouns they haven't learned yet. Use just the cards with vocabulary they know so they’re not trying to learn new words on top of sorting count from noncount. For mid-to-high beginners who are ready for all 64 cards, this becomes a great challenge that reinforces both grammar and vocabulary.

Why You’ll Love This:

Could you make this yourself? Sure! Would it take you at least an hour to find 64 quality photos, format them, create the cards, and make the reference lists? Absolutely. Probably more

For $3, you're buying back that hour. The photos are clear and appropriate for adults with no cartoon drawings or clip art that makes your students feel like they're in elementary school. Just straightforward images they'd encounter in real life.

The reference page means you don't have to be the answer key. Students can check their own work, or a teaching assistant can help, or that substitute teacher who doesn't know anything about count and noncount nouns can still facilitate the activity.
