Health is one of those topics that shows up in pretty much every adult ESL book once they’re out of the foundational levels, yet it's surprisingly hard for students to really talk about it. This health role play pack gives adult ESL students the structure they need to practice the conversations they already know they should be having.

Health is a standard topic in adult ESL classes, but familiarity with the theme doesn't make it easy to discuss. Talking about their own health, their children's health, or the healthcare system in a second language requires a kind of confidence that doesn't come from reading a textbook.

Students may already know some of the vocabulary. What they need is a chance to practice using it in the kinds of conversations they're already facing outside the classroom like, a call from a school nurse, a discussion about vaccines, a question about mental health, or a search for affordable care.

WHAT'S INSIDE the 35-page ROLE PLAY PACK:

  • ✅ Teacher pages — a full lesson guide covering goals, engagement strategies, study and preview sections, and tips for using scripts and scenario cards
  • ✅ 2 Anticipation pages — statements about health for students to reflect on and rate (scale 1–5), designed to get them thinking and talking before the role play begins
  • ✅ Idioms and expressions handout — common health-related idioms and proverbs with brief definitions
  • ✅ Essential vocabulary handout — words and phrases for discussing health topics, reading scripts, and building their own role plays
  • ✅ Conversation matching worksheet — students match lettered parent responses to a school nurse’s lines to build a complete, natural two-person conversation. + answer key + script version
  • ✅ Dialogue prompts — structured half-page prompt sheets (one per partner) that give students ideas for what to say and when, without scripting the language for them
  • ✅ Scripts — 10 scripts covering situations like calling in sick at work, getting a call from a school nurse, aging and health, encouraging kids to be active, rural healthcare, affordable care, vaccines, mental health, seeing a nutritionist, and more; for use as reader's theater and as models for student writing
  • ✅ Script starters — two starters per page with an opening line, a response, and blank lines for students to finish; can be done individually, with a partner, or in small groups. 3 pages.
  • ✅ Scenario cards — 10 sets giving character information for impromptu role plays or script writing, most designed for two or more students

THIS IS DESIGNED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS

Every scenario, every script, and every conversation in this pack was written with adult students in mind. That means no childish situations; just the real ones, the conversations students will have whether they feel ready or not.

This role play activity pack also works well with older secondary students in life skills classes who are building the same practical communication skills. If your students are mature enough to come up against these situations on their own (now or soon) in the real world, they're the right audience for this pack.
