FOR / SINCE in Present Perfect ACTIVITY | Linguistic Investigation + Task Cards

Adult ESL grammar students discover the rules for using for and since in the present perfect in this hands-on linguistic investigation designed for upper-beginner to lower-intermediate levels. Instead of memorizing a chart, students work together in small groups to sort sentences, notice patterns, and articulate their own understanding of how these two words function in the present perfect.

HOW TO USE THE LINGUISTIC INVESTIGATION:

Print and cut one set of cards per group of 2–4 students. Students read and sort the sentences, identify the patterns, and work out when to use for versus since. You're there to give them nudges if they get stuck, but they're doing the thinking.

Once groups have drawn their conclusions, bring the class together to compare findings. Then move to the included worksheet to solidify and extend what they've discovered. Use it as classwork, partner work, or homework, whatever fits your lesson flow.

This activity works best as an introduction to the topic. It's designed for in-person instruction and for teachers who want less lecturing and more meaningful student interaction.
