Money & Budgets Role Plays for Adult ESL | scripts, vocabulary, scenarios & more
Money and budgets as a topic show up in almost every adult ESL textbook (outside of the fundamental levels) because students know this topic matters and want to talk about it. The problem is that wanting to discuss something and actually being able to do it smoothly in English are two different things. This Money and Budgets role play pack gives adult ESL students the structure and the practice to have those conversations, not just the vocabulary to attempt them.
Your students already have opinions about saving, spending, renting versus buying, and what it means to stick to a budget. What they don't always have is enough practice voicing those opinions in English. This isn't a topic that needs to be explained to them. It needs to be practiced, and that's exactly what this pack is for.
WHAT'S INSIDE the 69-page ROLE PLAY PACK:
- ✅ Teacher pages — a full lesson guide covering goals, engagement strategies, how to use each component, and tips for adapting the pack to different class levels.
- ✅ 2 Anticipation pages— students rate statements about money and budgeting on a 1–5 scale, generating discussion and surfacing opinions before the role plays begin.
- ✅ Idioms and expressions handout — common money-related idioms and proverbs with brief definitions.
- ✅ Essential vocabulary handout — words and phrases students need for script reading, role play creation, and real financial conversations.
- ✅ 3 Conversation matching worksheets — students match lettered responses to Person 1's blank lines to build complete, natural two-person conversations.
- ✅ 2 Numbering worksheets — a harder format than the previous: students number scrambled lines to put the dialogue in order. Two versions of each: one uses italics to show who says what, and one does not. (not the same conversations as in the matching worksheets)
- ✅ Dialogue prompts — structured prompts that give students ideas for what to say and when, without scripting the language for them; partners each receive a half-page so the exchange stays spontaneous.
- ✅ 14 Scripts — ready-made dialogues for students who need the support; best used as reader's theater.
- ✅ Scenario cards — fifteen sets of character cards for impromptu role plays or collaborative script writing, most designed for two or more students.
THIS IS DESIGNED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS
Every scenario, every script, and every conversation in this pack was written with high intermediate to advanced adult students in mind. These are the kinds of financial conversations students are already having or are about to have: negotiating rent, talking through a budget, asking about a charge on a bill, deciding between two options when money is tight.
This role play activity pack also works well with older secondary students in life skills classes who are building the same practical communication skills. If your students are mature enough to come up against these situations on their own in the real world, they're the right audience for this pack.
This is included in my Adult ESL Role Plays Bundle.
