Tag Questions Matching GRAMMAR ACTIVITY for Adult ESL
Tag questions are tiny additions to statements, but they do a lot. With them, your adult ESL students can seek agreement, check understanding, soften a request, and invite someone into a conversation. This 14-page matching card activity gives beginner students the hands-on practice they need to feel the rhythm of tag questions before they try to use them on their own.
When students spread out the cards and work in small groups to find the tag that fits each question stem, something useful happens. They start saying the pairs out loud, checking each other's reasoning, and noticing the pattern. That peer reasoning is where the grammar takes hold, not in silent individual practice, but in the back-and-forth of collaborative work.
WHAT'S INSIDE this 14-page PDF:
✅ Tag question matching cards — question stem cards paired with tag ending cards, covering auxiliary verbs (can/can't, could/couldn't, will/won't, would/wouldn't, do/don't, does/doesn't, did/didn't, should/shouldn't) and pronouns (I, you, we, they, he, she, it)
✅ Teacher instructions — setup steps and classroom tips so the activity runs smoothly from the first time you use it
THIS IS DESIGNED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS
No childish designs, no condescending sentences, nothing that feels out of place in an adult classroom.
This activity works equally well with mature secondary ESL students who are building the same foundation in tag question formation.
A NOTE ON PREP AND SPACE
The cards need to be cut out before use, but once they're ready, they're reusable. This is also a spread-out activity. Groups need table space to lay out and sort the cards, so plan accordingly.
