Environment Role Plays for Adult ESL | scripts, vocabulary, scenarios & more
Earth Day comes once a year, but the environment never stops being relevant. This environment role play pack for adult ESL students is created around the conversations that come up year-round, like a composting debate with a neighbor, a town meeting about river pollution, and a landlord who has other plans for the empty lot someone else wants to turn into a community garden.
Environmental topics are everywhere, and they tend to come with opinions attached. How do they feel about their neighbor who won't turn off the outdoor lights? Wildfire smoke has everyone checking the air quality index. We've all got that coworker who thinks recycling is a waste of time. Adult students need the language to join in on these conversations, not just listen to them.
WHAT'S INSIDE the 30-page ROLE PLAY PACK:
- ✅ Teacher pages — a full lesson arc covering engagement, activation, study, and re-activation, with notes on
- how to use scripts, scenario cards, and the conversation matching worksheet.
- ✅ 4 Anticipation pages— students rate their level of agreement with statements about environmental topics on a 1–5 scale, giving them a personal starting point before the role plays begin.
- ✅ Idioms and expressions handout — common idioms and proverbs related to the environment, with brief definitions.
- ✅ Essential vocabulary handout — words and phrases students need for discussing environmental themes, reading scripts, and building their own role plays.
- ✅ Conversation matching worksheet — students match lettered responses to fill in Person 2's lines and build a complete, natural two-person conversation. + answer key + script version
- ✅ Scripts — 10 ready-made scripts covering scenarios like wildfire air quality, biodiverse lawns, composting, water conservation, single-use bags, and community clean-up. These work best as reader's theater.
- ✅ Scenario cards — ten sets of character cards for pairs and small groups, designed for impromptu role plays or script writing. Most scenarios work with two or more students.
THIS IS DESIGNED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS
Every scenario, every script, and every conversation in this pack was written with intermediate adult students in mind. These are the kinds of real conversations students might find themselves in with a neighbor, a coworker, or someone at a community meeting. The topics come up in real life, in real communities, in English.
This role play activity pack also works well with older secondary students in life skills classes who are building the same practical communication skills.
This is included in my Adult ESL Role Plays Bundle.
