You might not think that money idioms are any part of financial terminology, but that’s because native English speakers just use those idioms naturally. We don’t always realize that what we say sounds kinda weird to anyone who didn’t grow up speaking English.

American students get the money idioms, but adult ESL students are left wondering why being in the black is preferable to being in the red. They’re not sure what burning a hold in my pocket has anything to do with their friend wanting to go shopping. And they can’t find the recipe for a gravy train.

With this, your students will learn 30 idioms and expressions that they might hear or want to use. They’ll be practicing and reviewing all 30 with activities that make the terms memorable. These pages will be the ones that go home with them, not get tossed in the trash on their way out at the end of class.

Idioms are the kind of everyday English that fluent speakers use without thinking twice but present a roadblock to people learning English. That’s why your students need to understand that making a killing (probably) won’t result in an arrest and that robbing Peter to pay Paul solves nothing. Once they get that, they can start having fun making figurative language part of their daily communication.
