Pets Role Plays for Adult ESL | scripts, vocabulary, scenarios & more
Pets are one of those topics that feel light on the surface until your adult ESL student needs to tell a vet what's wrong with her cat, ask a landlord about the pet policy, or explain to a neighbor why her dog keeps getting out. This Pets role play pack gives students the language and practice they need to handle those conversations before they happen.
For many adult students, pets are already part of life. Or they're thinking about getting one and don't know how to ask the right questions. The topic covers real territory: adoption conversations, lost pet situations, neighbor disputes, vet visits, and landlord negotiations. These are the kinds of exchanges that require confidence in English, a sense of cultural norms, and the ability to read the other person's tone and respond appropriately.
WHAT'S INSIDE the 32-page ROLE PLAY PACK:
- ✅ Teacher pages — a full lesson plan covering introduction, goals, engagement strategies, study sections, previewing, using scripts, and scenario cards
- ✅ Anticipation page— statements related to the theme for students to reflect on and rate on a scale of 1–5, designed to spark discussion and get students thinking about their own opinions before the role plays begin
- ✅ Idioms/expressions handout — common idioms and proverbs related to pets with brief definitions
- ✅ Essential vocabulary handout — relevant words and phrases for discussing the theme, reading scripts, creating role plays, and joining discussions
- ✅ 2 Conversation matching worksheets — students match lettered responses to Person 1's blank lines to build a complete, natural two-person conversation
- ✅ Dialogue prompts — structured prompts that give students a framework for creating their own role plays without scripted language; one set per student in a pair (cut the page in half)
- ✅ Scripts — 10 scripts for use as reader's theater and as models for student script writing
- ✅ Scenario cards — 7 scenarios providing character information for impromptu role plays or script writing, primarily for 2–3 characters; Scenario 7 includes both a roommate version and a family version
THIS IS DESIGNED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS
Every scenario, every script, and every conversation in this pack was written with adult students in mind. That means no childish situations. Instead, there are real-world exchanges like talking to a vet, working out a pet policy with a landlord, or handling a situation with a neighbor's animal.
This role play activity pack also works well with older secondary students in life skills classes who are building the same practical communication skills. If your students are mature enough to be out on their own soon, they're the right audience for this pack.
This is included in my Adult ESL Role Plays Bundle.
