Present Progressive Tense GRAMMAR ACTIVITY for Adult ESL
These 42 scenario cards give adult ESL grammar students a reason to use the present progressive, not just conjugate it, but reach for it in the moment, the way you do when you need a polite excuse fast.
Students draw a card describing an awkward or inconvenient situation like someone's asking them to pop a back pimple, mow an overgrown lawn, or clean out a shared fridge, and they have to decline politely using a grammatically correct present progressive excuse. The constraint is the point: they can't just say no. They have to construct a sentence.

THIS IS DESIGNED FOR ADULT ESL STUDENTS
Every scenario in this activity was written with adult students in mind. That means the situations here feel grounded and human, not manufactured for a classroom. No scenarios that belong in a children's workbook, no examples that talk down to your students.
That said, these materials work just as well with mature secondary ESL students who need solid, communicative practice with the present progressive. This activity gives them the same rigorous, engaging practice without feeling remedial.
