Adult ESL grammar students sort, analyze, (and maybe argue) while reading sentence cards in this active and passive voice linguistic investigation. Working with up to 60 sentence cards, they examine real examples, spot the patterns, and figure out how active and passive voice actually work before you ever explain a rule.

This is how you get students thinking instead of just listening. They're analyzing sentence pairs, reasoning through the differences, and building their understanding together. Your job is to guide the conversation, not lecture through it.

WHAT'S INSIDE this 8-page PDF:

✅ 60 sentence cards with active and passive voice constructions (paired examples and standalone)

✅ 2 teacher pages

HOW TO USE THIS

Set up the cards before class and put students in small groups. Give them the cards and a task: sort them, find the patterns, and figure out what makes each sentence active or passive. You'll circulate, ask questions, and nudge their thinking when needed, but they're doing the heavy work.

Use the paired cards to push deeper discussion once students have a working theory. The standalone examples give them a chance to test what they've figured out. This works well as a full discovery lesson or a warm-up before explicit instruction.

THIS WAS CREATED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS

Your beginner to lower intermediate adult ESL grammar students are fully capable of reasoning through language patterns, and this activity gives them the structure to do exactly that. Instead of copying rules from the board, they're collaborating, discussing, and building a real understanding of active and passive voice through the process of figuring it out themselves.

This also works well with secondary ESL students and secondary native English speakers who have gaps in their grammar knowledge.
