The regular simple past tense comes early in any ESL curriculum, but the pronunciation of its -ed ending tends to get less attention than it deserves. Talked ends in /t/. Cleaned ends in /d/. Wanted ends in /ɪd/. The rule is learnable, but hearing it and producing it consistently are a different matter. Most grammar practice doesn't give students the repetition they need. That’s why you want this presentation-based activity. It gives adult ESL students structured, repeated oral practice with all three -ed ending sounds across 136 verbs, so the pattern isn't something they've seen once and that's it.

The slides are built around real photos, NOT cheesy clipart, with four verbs per slide, each followed by an answer slide so students can immediately check what they said. The pacing is yours to control: run a set of slides as a warm-up, use them to close a lesson, or work through the presentation across multiple class sessions. With 136 verbs and four differentiated answer sheets, there's enough here to revisit the concept at different depths without repeating the exact same exercise.

WHAT'S INSIDE:

✅ Teacher pages — overview of the activity structure and instructions for each answer sheet version

✅ Four differentiated answer sheets, each with its own answer key. Use Answer Sheets A, B, and C with Presentation ABC. Use Answer Sheet D with Presentation D.

  • Answer sheet A: students focus only on the ending sound of the simple past verbs. (2 pages + answer key)
  • Answer Sheet B: students see the verbs in their PAST form while choosing the final sound. (3 pages + answer key)
  • Answer Sheet C: students to see the BASE form of the verbs while choosing the final sound. (3 pages + answer key)
  • Answer Sheet D: Use this one when you want your students to see the base form, transform it into the simple past form, and then choose the final sound. (6 pages + answer key

✅ Two PDF presentation files: Both are 71 slides featuring 136 base-form verbs with photos, four verbs per slide followed by an answer slide.

  • Presentation ABC — This version shows the base verb AND the simple past verb form. Its answer slide highlights the correct -ed ending sound (/t/, /d/, or /ɪd/) for each verb. (This goes with answer sheets A, B, and C.)
  • Presentation D — This version shows the base verb ONLY to add a spelling component for the simple past form. Its answer slide adds the simple past form and highlights the correct -ed ending sound (/t/, /d/, or /ɪd/) for each verb. (This goes with answer sheet D.)

THIS IS DESIGNED FOR ADULT ESL STUDENTS

Everything (words, images, design) was chosen and created with adult students in mind. This focused, repeatable practice respects your students' maturity.

The materials work equally well with mature secondary ESL students who need the same solid grounding in regular past tense pronunciation. And if you teach mature secondary native English speakers with gaps in their phonological awareness, this structured, photo-supported format also gives them a clear framework without talking down to them.
